Ventral pics
John, for ventral shots like this, do you have the bug just lying on a table or other horizontal surface (with the camera pointing straight down, which is kind of an awkward position for the photographer)? I'm working on getting good ventral shots and would like to be able to even approach your level of quality.

I do all my shots the same way mostly
I have brief description in my user info but I shoot them in a petri dish on a white surface with a Canon MP-E 65mm. The camera is hand held and I have really strong lighting so I can see if the image is in focus. It would be easier if the camera was mounted on a stand with a focusing rail but I generally shoot live shots and the bugs move around too much.

Thanks
I looked up those illuminators; very nice. I have inexpensive Ikea gooseneck LEDs, but I bet what you've got is much more effective.

They put out a highly focused beam
They are expensive but I have found good deals on ebay. They seem to have a fairly high failure rate though...

By the way, to get a ventral like that I wait till the bug is still then flip the petri dish over.

petri dishes
My cheap plastic petri dishes are so scratched up that photos through them look terrible. What kind are you using? [Edit: Never mind, I found some less scratched ones!]

Ventral
Ah, ok. I should try that (flipping the dish). Thanks. Will see what I decide about the focus lighting.
