Thanks to both Johns for your comments. I will be on the lookout for any others I see in the yard and post the photos if I get any that aren't frass. Would I add them to the original shot, or post one separately? Again, I love all your help with these difficult i.d's.

Post different flies separately.

Males have a longer abdomen that is less rounded at the tip. The species characters are on the basitarsus of the fore leg. (Visible leg segments go coxa, femur, tibia, basitarus, tarsomeres 2-5 with the claws attached to tarsomere 5.)

The sipho group has mostly yellow legs. By location this may be Condylostylus coloradensis, but reliable ID needs a shot of male front legs.
