Pretty sure it's a Euryalus -
Hyalophora euryalus
Los Osos, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA
August 11, 2003
Size: body is about 2.5 inches
a friend captured this beautiful HUGE moth... odd that it was out during the day; pretty sure it's a Euryalus... not sure.

Thank you
thank you both so much for your information! I had researched this before and had come up to the Hyalophora cecropia... but it is not in this region... researched further and came up with Hyalophora euryalus. The other thing that was odd about this (besides the daytime appearance) was the time of year... normally they are not around that late in the year, August.

it looks similar to
, but I had no idea what a Euryalus was so I looked it up and found an image of a cecropia crossed with a euryalus....see..

Robin moth.
Just a point of clarification, the full name should be Hyalophora euryalus, the "ceanothus silk moth." The genus is certainly correct, but I am no authority on the western species.
