Acronicta betulae

Was it on River Birch?

 
Second Opinion
Looks like Acronicta innotata to me. The A1 & A8 dorsal pinacula are raised and enlarged. That has not been the case for any of the Acronicta betulae I have reared. Also the A7 dorsal pinacula are tiny compared to A8. They are smaller too for Acronicta betulae but not to that degree. Additionally AFAIK the host plant (Betula nigra) does not naturally occur in Canada. Southern New Hampshire is apparently the northern extent of it's natural range. Lastly the BugGuide info page Acronicta betulae indicates this would be a new species record for all of Canada.

I'll add some photos of Acronicta betulae larvae and let you judge for yourself.
