Antheraea polyphemus - female

Antheraea polyphemus - Female
Dallas, Dallas County, Texas, USA
September 6, 2007
Size: about a 5" wing span
This crazy, big moth was hanging out by the mailbox at my apartment last night. The body is so furry that I thought it might be a bat when I first saw it but, it has creepy spider legs. You can see straight through the dots on the wings. What is this? Are they normal for this area?

Moved from Moths.

Polyphemus moth (female)
