I'm skeptical, I don't recall the brown area behind the head on the Epargyreus clarus that I have had in my yard.

The BugGuide page has some photos of caterpillars with that coloration behind the head, like this one http://bugguide.net/node/view/988566

could that be a variation in the population, or maybe they develop that color close to when they go form a chrysalis? I don't remember ever seeing one like that around where I live
