Asilid - Saropogon pyrodes

Asilid - Saropogon pyrodes
0.7 km ExNE of Amado, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
September 5, 2017
Found this beauty as I was walking back to my car mid-afternoon on a very warm day. It was hanging around the low grasses at the periphery of a Pogonomyrmex nest in grassland type habitat on floodplain of Santa Cruz River, which at the time was a dry wash. It alternated perches between the low grasses, short dead stems poking up from the soil, and the soil surface.

It took at least one prey item during my photo shoot (will add shots).

Saropogon?

Saropogon sp., new?
Yes. a beauty for sure. Looks similar to nitidus except that sp. w/ an all-gray tomentose thorax; all shiny-reddish integument, w/ white racing stripes, seems new & unique! If possible, more pictures please...

Cool, thanks
Sure, will get them processed and posted soon.

Unfortunately I was well-baked by the time I found this individual and too hot and tired to throw on the MP-E for some really close-in shots. Plus I just wanted to get as many shots as I could with the 100mm before it flew away. The other indivduals I saw did not stay in a spot for very long and didn't seem to return to the same perch if you spooked them.
