Meleoma of eastern Canada
Distributional data places 2 species in the eastern part of Canada:
M. emuncta
and
M. signoretti
. At present, only the former is directly reported from Newfoundland & Labrador, though the latter is reported in Quebec.
In Tauber's key
(
1
)
, the two species split at node 14 based on thoracic spines (denser medially in
M. signoretti
, uniformly spaced in
M. emuncta
). Looking at Toschi's
(
2
)
figure of
M. emuncta
(reported as
M. comata
) and Tauber's figure of
M. signoretti
, I do think this aligns better with
M. emuncta
. There's an anterior median spot here, which I see in the
M. emuncta
figure but not that of
M. signoretti
. There's also a stripe that goes all the way to the antennae in
M. emuncta
but not in
M. signoretti
. It also looks like
M. signoretti
should have denser setae near the eyes. Tauber et al. (2014)
(
3
)
actually include a photo of a
M. signoretti
larva. It's similar in the body but differs in markings on the head capsule.
The kicker should be this statement by Garland (1985):
(
4
)
"The third-instar larva [of
M. emuncta
] has a frontal spot, which will distinguish it from the third-instar larva of
M. signoretti
in the greater part of Canada." This is most visible in the third photo.
