Thanks Jim
This one got by me, and I forgot about it.

Helocombus bifidus
This is Helocombus bifidus, a monotypic genus that is commonly found in detrital filled ponds in the Eastern US. It can often be confused with Hydrobius fuscipes, which is found in the same habitats, but has shorter maxillary palpi and less distinct elytral stria.

Water Scavenger?
I'm guessing, check out the other images in the guide...

I agree.
Does look like a hydrophilid, but in Tom's defense, according to recent studies, Hydrophilidae are now considered, more or less, to be aquatic scarab beetles! Ain't cladistics grand:-)

Water Scavenger
Thanks for the ID. I didn't know Water Scavengers could have ridged shells, rather than nice smooth elytra.
