i saw 1 to 5 of them per flower of butternut squash during warm part of day.

This should be Peponapis. The male (on top) has a small white patch on the clypeus, and the abdomen has distinc stripes of white hair. The other genus of squash bees has larger white or yellow clypeus and the abdomens are reddish.
