Dragonfly - Aeshna verticalis

Dragonfly - Aeshna verticalis
Lake Farm County Park, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
September 1, 2017
Size: Large dragonfly
Landed on our camper awning just before sunset. We'd seen it capture a small dragonfly and munch on it earlier while perched on side of tree.

Aeshna sp.
That is a Darner in the Aeshna genus. With that view it is impossible to ID to species. With those, a combination of the cerci and the front stripe on the thorax are used to make an ID. This one could be a Canada or Green-striped Darner in the Dane County area. Farther north in WI, it could be a couple other species as well.

Ha! I told my husband at the time "get a shot from the side, it's diagnostic". But he sent me the top view, of course. I just got him to send me those, still on his phone.

Male Aeshna verticalis
That is a male Green-striped Darner. This has been a good year for them in WI. The front thoracic stripe is notched. It is also green and the rearward projection at the top gets thicker rather than tapering. The one on the tree also looks to be the same although it should be its own entry since you can't be sure that it is the same individual.
