New Odontomyia species for BugGuide - Odontomyia hirtocculata - Male
Baylands Nature Preserve, Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California, USA
September 17, 2017
Found in a low area adjacent to marshes at edge of the San Francisco Bay, nectaring on flowers of a weedy composite (which keys to Senecio linearifolius var. linearifolius in the Jepson eFlora, and appears to be a new northern CA record for that recently introduced invasive species from Australia).

In both full-size photos here, one can see the short but clearly discernible cross-vein r-m...as in figures 1 & 2 of Plate 1 from James(1936)...which indicates genus Odontomyia. Note that while figures 3 & 4 of that plate were referred to there as Odonotomyia as well...the absence of cross-vein r-m places them in Hedriodiscus under current circumscriptions (e.g. compare the wings venation diagrams for Odonotomyia and Hedriodiscus from the MND(1)).

The presence of cross-vein r-m, together with the conspicuous pile on the eyes here, immediately takes one two species O. hirtocculata in the key in James(1936). The description given for O. hirtocculata fits reasonably well.
