Spring Fishfly - Chauliodes rastricornis - male

Spring Fishfly - Chauliodes rastricornis - Male
Hwy 55 and Sedwick, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
April 4, 2005
Size: 33 mm
Found under a light high on a wall about 10:30 p.m. It looked very fresh and unworn. After several tries, I was able to bring it down to the sidewalk for photography. Length (35 mm) was measured by photographing adjacent to a scale, and is given from front of mandibles to tip of folded wings. Looking at the abdomen in hand, I'd say mandibles to tip of abdomen length was about 25 mm or slightly more. This species seems to be rather smaller than the summer-flying C. pectinicornis.

The pectinate antennae indicate this is a male. Female of this species has serrate antennae.
