Caterpillar on a cottonwood tree - Smerinthus cerisyi

Size: about an inch, maybe more
Found this guy on a cottonwood tree. The picture is taken on a large cottonwood leaf. He's very lively and I was wondering if his cocoon will make a wild silk I can harvest.
