Soldier Beetle - Cantharis rufa

Soldier Beetle - Cantharis rufa
Stow, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
June 28, 2004
There were some close in appearance in this guide, but not an exact match. So for now Cantharidae is as far as I can go.

Cantharis rufa Linnaeus
This is Cantharis rufa Linnaeus. The elytra of C. rufa varies from testaceous in colour to being somewhat suffused with a piceous shading (as in the above specimen) but it is never as uniformly dark as in C. curtisii. Similarly, the pronotum of C. rufa can be a clear testaceous colour, or have variably sized and variably defined darkish spots. The pronotum of C. curtisii is always clear testaceous, never with any spots.
