Eupeodes latifasciatus ... female
Hi Ross,
I made a mistake on this one. The yellow markings on the abdomen are too deep for Syrphus opinator, especially tergite 2, (seen better in other image). The black on the frons is too restricted for opinator and opinator has dark hairs on the yellow part of frons at sides near antennae and on the upper face at sides. Easier from dorsal view.
Hind tarsi are mostly pale but dark in opinator.
Side margins of tergite 5 are yellow and the black mark narrows abruptly to a point and doesn't reach side margin whereas in opinator the black on tergite 5 usually reaches side margin and it is still broad toward side margin.
The scutellum in opinator is partly bright or pale yellow whereas here it is darker and of uniform colour.
The dark rich brown thorax and bright foxy tawny hairs at sides (especially above wing bases) is typical of Eupeodes latifasciatus.)
I have sent it to Dr. Martin Hauser.
