930192 – 8075 – Cisthene picta - Cisthene picta
Rockingham, Windham County, Vermont, USA
July 17, 2015
Hugh McGuinness had originally IDed this as C. kentuckiensis.
Hugh's comment: Chuck Sexton has suggested that joannerusso's records for Vermont actually pertain to C. picta. This was a species of which I was completely unaware. At USNM the nearest specimens of picta are from Kansas, so I did not even consider it.
Two marks on this moth are inconsistent with kentuckiensis and consistent with picta: 1. the dorsal thorax is uniformly orange (it is black surrounded by orange in kentuckiensis); 2. the costa on either side of the median band is orange (it is black in kentuckiensis).
