Moth -
Mesogona olivata
-
Ellensburg, Kittitas County, Washington, USA
September 26, 2017
Found along Taneum River. Think this might be a male Mesogona subcuprea. Four showed up that night. Three male and one female. This one had the most defined markings.

Thanks again!
Just wondering. How can one tell the difference between Mesogona olivata and subcrupea without looking at the hindwings?

Okay,
Is it that there is more of a "corner" above the eye spot on the AM line in subcrupea?

Oh my gosh.
This is hard. Looks to me like the AM line is more horizontal in olivata but both are wavy. Based on the photos seemed that the PM line in olivata is more of a smooth curve rather will less "straighter" sections.

Traverse lines
Chris, sorry for the confusion. The AM (antemedial line) is the upper, and the PM (postmedial line) is the lower. I hope this makes sense.

I think I got it!
Now that I am looking at the pictures with fresh eyes today the difference seems obvious. There is a much stronger curve (almost 90 degrees) in the AM line olivata!
Thanx for your patience. It was a good lesson for me.

Thanks for checking.
It also looked like Ipimorpha pleonectusa to me but that species seems to have an extra eye-spot. Also the data doesn't place it in Washington but one never knows about that.

Good observation ,,,
All the
Ipimorpha
moths have the additional claviform spot. Yours only has reniform and orbicular spots.
