Broad-tipped Conehead - Neoconocephalus triops - male

Broad-tipped Conehead - Neoconocephalus triops - Male
Hwy 54 and Fayetteville, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
April 4, 2005
Size: 50 mm
Found singing from some shrubbery in a well-lit parking lot at about 9:00 p.m. Captured and posed. Length measured by photographing adjacent to a scale. This is N. tripos, according to season (early--adult overwinters), and details of cone and wing length. See guide page and images below for details.

This particular photo shows that wingtips extend more than 11 mm beyond the hind femora, a character of N. triops, differentiating from the smaller N. retusus, which also occurs later in the season. See SINA account.

Species identification in this genus is tough. I believe this series of photos nails down this one, especially with the early date. (Usual disclaimer: I'm no expert, just a guy with a camera and some references.)

The dead dipteran is coincidental, and was not associated with the conehead.
