Probably Eleodes californica Blaisdell ... I haven't seen records of this from south of Joshua Tree .. but the habitat is right. I need to get this guy for DNA.

Looks like that would be a new species for BugGuide. What subgenus is it in? As I remember, this was on a steep, rocky slope above the big wash / valley near the Bow Willow campground at Anza-Borrego.
