Flesh/Tachinid

Flesh/Tachinid
Hillsborough, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
July 15, 2002
Captured from video. Thought this was a Flesh Fly but was told it might be a Tachinid. The fly was very near a dead squirrel that I put out in an attempt to get video of maggots (got plenty of maggot shots). It was larger than the Blow Flies and other Flesh Flies in the vicinity.

Hi, what kind camera video
Hi,

video camera
The camera is a Canon XL-1 which is no longer made. It's a miniDV format camera which allows the mounting of all of Canon's still camera lenses (with an adapter). I use a 70-300 mm zoom lens with macro.

Moved from Tachinidae.

Tachinidae.
I would go with Tachinidae. Most of the large flesh flies have a checkered pattern to the abdomen, not banded as in this specimen.

Tachinid looks right
Spikey abdomen is the clue. I think it's Zelia. See:

Thanks very much for the help.
