gall on shrubby white oak
The oak, again, is
Quercus cornelius-mulleri
. I think the gall may be a
Cynips douglasii
gall. However, Ron Russo thinks that galls that look sort of like these on southern CA white shrubby oaks may be an undescribed species -- or more than one undescribed species. See my discussion of this
here
. So, the situation is a bit frustrating. I hope it gets sorted out one day....

Interesting
Does he think they are all caused by
Cynips
species at least? How do I get a copy of his 2012 addendum? I wonder if it makes sense to place galls like this under
C. douglasii
or make a separate page for
C. douglasii
-like galls of uncertain status.

maybe move to Cynips douglasii
I've been unsure what to do about these. Perhaps move to
Cynips douglasii
now, and change later if more information becomes available? Your gall does resemble what Weld (1957) shows in Figure 93 as
Cynips (Antron) douglasii
.
The gall Ron shows in the 2012 Addendum has rounder "points." I'm emailing you a photo of that page.
I did move
this one
to
C. douglasii
a while back.
To me they all look like variations of the same thing. I'm hoping that we can get this cleared up one day....
