Yellowheaded Spruce Sawfly Diprionidae: Pikonema alaskensis - Euura alaskensis

Yellowheaded Spruce Sawfly Diprionidae: Pikonema alaskensis - Euura alaskensis
Fort MacMurray, Alberta, Canada
July 2, 2005
Size: 2 cm
Found on white spruce planted in a reclamation area at a tar sands mining site.

Edit 9Oct08 - The person who took this image is Rob macNeil, a member of a Canadian Forest Service (CFS) field crew (based in Fredericton, NB) who conducts field work on forest defoliators, including some species of diprionid sawflies. This species was positively identified at a tar sands study site in Fort MacMurray, Alberta. The company was having trouble with these sawflies infesting white spruce planted on a reclamation site, and CFS was asked to investigate. This image was used in our final report to the proponent.
