Gomphocerinae? - Metaleptea brevicornis - male

Gomphocerinae? - Metaleptea brevicornis - Male
Houston, Harris County, Texas, USA
September 10, 2007
It made a weird sound. The closest thing I can think of to describe it is glass beads hitting a tile floor.

Really?
It does look exactly like the clip-wing. Also it wasn't this individual that was making the sound. Maybe a different species that looked the same? I don't know. Thanks!

Metaleptea brevicornis
I agree, that's what it is. Most Slant-faced hoppers have a file on the inner hind femur (males more than females) which they rub on the tegmina to make a rasphy sort of scratching sound. Most Band-wings have the file on the tegmina, and make a squeaky sound. This species lacks the file entirely, but I would not doubt that it can produce sound anyway. It has tympana (ears), so it certainly can hear.

Thanks for the clarification,
Dave.

Moved from Clipwing Grasshopper. Well, crap, I hate being embarrassed like that...We'll see what Dave Ferguson has to say.

Clipped-wing grasshopper.
Male Metaleptea brevicornis. Nice shot.

Thanks
very much. I thought this family was silent! :) Oh well. I guess insect names are pretty misleading. Thanks again!
