Prominent larva - Notodonta

Prominent larva - Notodonta
Toronto, Leslie Spit, Ontario, Canada
September 10, 2017
Size: ~ 2 cm
I sent a photo of another individual of this species (http://bugguide.net/node/view/1438650/bgimage/). There were two individuals on a small willow and I quickly selected one of the images and submitted it. Unfortunately this image was not the best for identifying. This second individual may be easier to id to species. Thank you.

Even with the
new monograph (1), the decision is tough, but it still looks to be scitipennis to us. The difficulty is that the description in the new fascicle for torva is basically the same as the description in Eastern Caterpillars for scitipennis! Bright orange and feeding on willow now points to torva, but the large fin on A2 points to scitipennis :(

Sorry, same comment as on the previous post. We would say scitipennis, but can't confirm that till we see the new monograph :(
