Pelham road leaf miner on Ulmus alata D845 2017 1 - Bucculatrix

Pelham road leaf miner on Ulmus alata D845 2017 1 - Bucculatrix
Durham, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
October 7, 2017
These looked small for Stigmella apicialbella, yet it could just be that. They did not look aborted either--two are empty and one looks like it died right before emergence.

Moved from Unidentified Leaf Mines.

Bucculatrix eclecta has been reared from elm but no details of its larval biology are recorded. It is only known from Ontario, New York, and Maine, so I'm hesitant to call this that species, but that would be the best tentative name to put on these mines. The cocoon is ribbed like other Bucculatrix cocoons but is black or dark brown. It would be great if you could find some cocoons on or around this tree.

I searched this morning, and
I searched this morning, and found four cocoons and one caterpillar--most of the cocoons were in amongst the corky bark toward the base of the tree. They look ribbed, and grayish brown--the right size and shape to be Bucculatrix. I will try to post a photo soon, if it came out ok. I can also try to send them soon.

Great!
I noticed a Bucculatrix mine and empty molting cocoon on one of the Brachys leaves you sent (D842).
