Moth with deep set eyes - Condica sutor

Moth with deep set eyes - Condica sutor
Maplesville, Chilton County, Alabama, USA
October 6, 2017
Size: 2 cm WS
This was a dark brown speckled moth. It looked like he had a doughnut-shaped structure behind his neck. Not sure what that is. I see two deep set eyes and a large nose.

Condica sutor
I'm reasonably certain this is Condica sutor. The wingspan of that species is listed as 29-38 mm, however, larger than you listed. I assume the "size" you listed (2 cm) is an estimate, as an accurate wingspan measurement almost always requires a pinned, spread specimen. My suggestion would be to not fill in the "size" field unless a direct measurement was taken. Instead estimate the size in the comments field or leave it out altogether. Happy mothing!

Your exposure is fine
The sheen in the basal area, when using flash from above, is sometimes alleviated by adjusting the angle slightly towards the head than directly above. Mostly I just shoot a bunch and hope for a good one : )

Condica sutor
That looks like a match. Some of the dark moths are difficult to photograph so that enough detail can be seen to make an ID. On this one, I over-exposed a little. Sometimes I try different angles, especially on moths that have a sheen. Yes, he could have been larger, and I'll leave the size field blank in the future if I'm not sure.
