Hodges #8170 - Banded Tiger Moth - Apantesis vittata - male

Hodges #8170 - Banded Tiger Moth - Apantesis vittata - Male
Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, USA
October 5, 2017
Size: Forewing ≈18mm
Found resting several meters away from black light illuminated sheet. This provides an October BugGuide record for Florida. I ruled out Apantesis phalerata as the ID because it typically has two black spots on its collar and, according to Christian Schmidt’s “Synopsis of Apantesis” (published in Research Gate (2009) and made available to me as pdf by Ken Childs) has a “more elongate forewing shape” (hard to tell on photos of live moths because of distortion by photographic angle). For additional information provided by Schmidt’s paper see discussion here.
