Melanoplus differentialis
Hi, The 'Differential Grasshopper' is a common widespread species (coast to coast) that can be very destructive in yards and gardens at times. I was reading something interesting about it in a book just yesterday; stating that it wasn't found south of Virginia east of the Appalachians, but that was written in 1920, and not long before that it was supposedly absent from everything east of the. It really likes old fields, leafy crops, weedy roadsides and such, so it does quite well with the activities of us humans.
