Bermuda grass flea beetle? - Chaetocnema

Bermuda grass flea beetle? - Chaetocnema
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
September 4, 2007
Size: about 2 mm
A few years back when I had just begun using a sweepnet I collected a good many flea beetles from giant bermuda grass. I didn't have the camera/lens system then that I do now. I don't think I posted any of those images. However, I seem to recall someone along the way telling me that Alticini do not live on grasses. I had been weeding a gravel bed Sept. 9, seeing a lot of tiny jumping bugs and, I thought, a few flea beetles. I wondered if, in my early neophyte days, I might have mistaken the bugs for beetles and decided to see what I could collect in my sweepnet.

I found a few unmowed patches of Bermuda grass with seedheads where I collected an assortment of the tiny jumping bugs, a number of mites, and this lone flea beetle, which, for all I know, fell out of a tree onto the grass a moment earlier.

Chaetocnema
I think this is a species of Chaetocnema.
Many fleabeetles occur on grasses (and also on ferns and even mosses)

Good to know I'm not (necessarily) crazy :-)
Thanks, Rob. I guess flea beetles can be on just about anything green then.

not crazy?
try telling that to somebody who doesn´t collect beetles ;)

But yes, fleabeetles are among the less picky leafbeetles. They are usually the first to arrive in succesional situations. Also many are polyphagous and eat/try about anything that has young leaves.
