Alder leaftier - Gracillariid? - Caloptilia alnivorella

Alder leaftier - Gracillariid? - Caloptilia alnivorella
New River Beach Provincial Park, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada
July 16, 2017
A folded alder leaf collected on 3 July 2017 was one of an abundant number in a wooded campground. Most alder bushes contained many folded leaves. Two adult moths emerged, one on the 16th (pictured) and one on the 18th.

A larva was photographed 3 July in situ. One pupa was photographed on 14 July at home. The second moth to emerge was stuck to the pupal case.

Both moths and pupae were saved as specimen # NRBPP-01.

I am at a loss to place these moths in the Gracillariidae, as they were not blotch miners.

alnivorella?
Identified from viewing this page as Caloptilia alnivorella by J-F Landry, NIS-CNC, Ottawa.

Date?
Is this the adult that emerged on July 16th or 18th? If so, this is the date you should put on the date field. You may have to correct the dates of other images, too, please. It helps with record keeping and to understand what is going on.

Moved
Moved from Leaf Blotch Miner Moths.

Caloptilia spp. are initially leafminers, later leafrollers (or folders), not necessarily on the same leaf as the mine. (Also, not all gracillariid mines are blotches; never trust a common name applied to a whole family of microlepidoptera!)

Thanks
Good advice, as usual. I am sending these moth specimens and the chalcids to the NIS in Ottawa soon in the hopes they will be able to id them. So, stay tuned, although it will take maybe 3-4 months.
