Hi Larry,

Thanks for identifying this. My guide, Jones et al. 2013, does not show hair at the claspers of Cordulia shurtleffii, but perhaps it is an omission.

Should I change all green-eyed emerald from my latest submission to Cordulia shurtleffii?

Are the green-eyed individuals all male or perhaps eye-colour (and abdomen color?) change as the insect matures?

Jones et al
Many of the illustrations, including the ones of Cordulia in that book, are no better than bad cartoons. The Whiteface and Meadowhawk whole critter illustrations are particularly bad.

Compare what you have to some good photos available a number of places including here on BugGuide. I skimmed what you submitted and I think they were all Cordulia apart from the Racket-tailed which I confirmed. You'll have to check them all.

The green eye colour develops with age and can be different between the sexes depending on species.

Thanks! It's good to know abo
Thanks! It's good to know about Jones et al. ... it is considered the best guide for the Algonquin-Ottawa area ... perhaps this is why I have had hard time identifying what appears to be common species.
