Sphingidae, dorsal - Eumorpha pandorus
100 Acre Wood, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
July 23, 2017
July 23, 2017: collected this larva on Virginia Creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, in an Oak/Maple woods near the base of the Tree of the Year, 2016

Virginia Creeper and Wild Grape are common plants around here yet this is the very first Pandora Sphinx, larva or adult, I've seen. Such a beauty.

July 30, 2017: on/before, molted to last larval instar
August 5, 2017: crawled beneath peat at the bottom of the rearing jar
September 11, 2017: peat was pushed aside and the pupa was visible, There was no climbing stick in the jar, went to get one but got distracted. Later the moth had emerged and appeared to be struggling on top of the peat, got a stick but it crawled right off the stick onto my hand. Took it outside to the trunk of a tree. Alas, the wings looked crinkled as if they might have set without inflating. Luckily the wings did inflate. The moth was still on the tree 14 hours later but then left.
