Unknown Beetle? - Meloe

Unknown Beetle? - Meloe
Millbrook, NY at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Dutchess County, New York, USA
October 14, 2017
Size: 1.5 inches long
These insects were found in the garden soil next to the Cary Institute main building in Millbrook, NY. I also found a few of the same species in mid-September. I thought they might be beetles, but they appear to be flightless and do not have the typical beetle set of wings. The heads and pinched thoraxes look like Hymenopterans to me. Their color is a shiny, metallic blue.
