This is more likely L. mactans. Small adult size and markings not typical of variolus, primarily basal band (red band behind head) and extra large dorsal spots (red spots down middle of back; spots often fused forming a posterior 'stripe'). The white markings on sides are called lateral bands. The shape of the bands is typical of both species.

Ah, I compared it ...
to another already placed there but don't think it had the red on the anterior abdomen, now I see the difference. That's helpful, maybe we could add that bit to the info page if you think it's usually reliable?

So
far the shape of the basal band seems helpful to distinguish the black species when it is present, although dorsal markings may be completely absent on adult female black species (including 'black' colored geometricus females, but their hourglass is unique).
Regarding adult basal bands:
variolus seems to have the least variation... almost always a thin to medium white band split in the middle, or absent
mactans appear to have the most variation... usually broad, complete or split in middle, or absent
sometimes the basal band is connected to the anterior set of lateral bands as it is in juveniles,
color of band white, red, orange, yellow, tan, white or other colored outline of band
hesperus has some variation... band distally broad and narrowing towards center, split in middle or complete, or absent
sometimes connected to anterior lateral bands,
color usually white, tan, yellowish, orange-ish, or reddish, or white/other mentioned color outline.
Compare my description to images and see what you think. If it makes sense and you agree, may very well be good for info page.
If it seems like rubbish, then.... either way let me know

Yes,
this is a male. You can tell from the enarged appendages near the spider’s mouth (pedipalps). Some people think they look like boxing gloves.
