The larva is dead, but I'm fairly sure it's this species, which would later expand the mine to a blotch. No miners are recorded from
L. mariana
.

How does one distinguish this species, especially at this stage? By the way, if you do not wish to keep the leaf, I would eventually like it back.

Not many options on Lyonia
The only thing that might resemble this is
Stigmella corylifoliella
, which would have a persistent circular eggshell. There was no egg in evidence here, and the dead larva is more slender than a
Stigmella
would be.
