Stem borer, Hydrophyllum

Stem borer, Hydrophyllum
Fern Hollow, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
June 8, 2017
06/08/17 Conspicuous wilting of great waterleaf, Hydrophyllum appendiculatum (first image in this series); close inspection reveals a faint, narrow, winding mine inside a stem (second image), made by a very young lep larva (third and fourth images). Stems collected for rearing.

06/14/17 More examples collected for rearing

06/28/17 I open up all the stems in my rearing containers and find six larvae, all of which are transferred to fresh stems or petioles of Virginia waterleaf, Hydrophyllum virginianum (which grows in my yard, unlike H. appendiculatum!)

06/29/17 Another larva or two collected for rearing

July or early August (I don't have the date handy) -- First adult

08/12/17 Photographed a late-instar larva

08/13/17 Second adult from the batch rearing:

October 2017 Late-season generation found feeding in leaf petioles of host plant's fall growth:

As I recall, during the late spring or summer I also found what appeared to be an example of this moth's feeding sign in a stem or petiole of Virginia waterleaf, H. virginianum, though I did not photograph or collect
