Pilophorus discretus - female

Pilophorus discretus - Female
Patagonia, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
October 21, 2017
Size: 3.2 mm to tip of abdomen
Coordinates: 31.541, -110.730
Collected by sweeping Ambrosia monogyra in a very biodiverse arroyo, which is, tragically, inexorably transitioning to a Johnson-grass barren.
coll. and det. as P. discretus Van Duzee by J T Botz.
Body size is the main character used to distinguish P. discretus from P. minutus in Schuh & Schwartz (1988)(1). Namely, the length from front of head to cuneal fracture is greater than 2.6 mm in the former and less than 2.6 mm in the latter. In the three specimens (all females) collected on this occasion, this measurement is 2.7 mm. It falls within the intersection of known ranges of these two species.
