Stem borer in Hieracium scabrum

Adults had emerged by the time I came upon affected stems (except, apparently, for the one in the thumbnail image above). Placement under Melanagromyza sp. is speculative, based on the existence of other species in this genus that are known to bore in herbaceous stems, pupate therein, and leave behind straw-colored exuviae. This one will apparently need to be reared to get a conclusive ID, as Spencer and Steyskal's 1986 manual does not list Hieracium as a host
