Swellings on male spikes, giant ragweed

Swellings on male spikes, giant ragweed
Trout Run Trail, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
August 15, 2017
This was my second season trying to rear this one. Still no adults yet. But at least I got a photo of the gallmaker this year!

This gall may be located by searching male spikes of giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida) for dense growths of the flower clusters. In the image here, the galls in the left and the middle are still hidden by flower clusters, while the gall at the right is more visible (thanks to my stripping away the flower clusters). This rightmost gall and its inhabitant are shown in more detail in the later images of this series.

Moved
Moved from Unidentified Galls. Bumps/knobs for legs and presence of a distinct head capsule with eyes suggest strongly to me that this is a beetle.
