Weevil #2, Osmorhiza claytonii - Listronotus oregonensis

Weevil #2, Osmorhiza claytonii - Listronotus oregonensis
Dunning's Spring, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
September 11, 2017
07/16/17 Collected beetle larva in stem of sweet cicely, Osmorhiza claytonii. Larva was found near ground level in stem and was apparently boring in stem/root, as frass was present

07/21/17 Transferred to carrot. Works for Papaipema lep larvae...and Osmorhiza is related to carrot, so...this oughta work, right?

09/11/17 It did! Adult weevil found in rearing container

Listronotus oregonensis, det. Guy Hanley.

I have attempted to compare
your images to both species I have specimens of that I know are pests of carrot, L oregonensis and L. texanus and neither seems to fit well morphologically. This is an interesting specimen since you have emergence data with it, and would be interesting to do genitalic dissection to nail down the species, which if it was something different the info would add to hostplant knowledge of this genus. Id be happy to do the dissection so you can have a reliable ID.

Specimen found
Hello Guy -- It turns out this specimen didn't get thrown out after all, but was in the freezer at the college all this time. Would you still be interested in examining it? I'd be happy to send it to you. Btw my email is johnbvdl *AT* gmail *DOT* com.

Great; thanks so much, Guy!
I'll track down the specimen and would be happy to send it your way. To what address should I send it?

oh boy
just found this comment again and attempted to find a contact for you so I could provide you my address so we could get this specimen Identified! working with Listronotus right now!
Let me know!

Hello Guy
Thanks so much for checking in again and for being willing to take a look at this weevil. Unfortunately, after searching carefully through my collection today, I was unable to locate the specimen. Some of my specimens, stored in a freezer at a local college, got thrown out last year after my "lease" on the freezer space expired, and I suspect this weevil was in that batch. So I am sorry to say I don't have the specimen for you. However, I will certainly keep an eye out for more opportunities to rear this animal again in the future, and if I do rear it again I will contact you.
