Monarch - Danaus plexippus

Monarch - Danaus plexippus
Bashakill WMA, Sullivan County, New York, USA
September 17, 2007
5 larvae seen on 2 adjacent Common Milkweeds. Several stands of Common Milkweed in the area were reduced to just stalks and seed pods - no leaves at all.

Big Eaters
Most of the milkweed around here is thin leaved, and some of its grown for lantana-like flowers. The cats strip it down to the stem, and the ugly result is often uprooted. Bad news for the next generation.

Thanks for your comment. This was the first time that I have noted such extensive destruction around here.
