hunting Wasp ? - Prionyx
Manteca, San joaquin County, California, USA
September 18, 2007
Size: around 3/4 "
This Wasp is a new one to me , but probably familiar to the guide . It looks like a hunting Wasp with a thin waist . I found it sunning in the early morning , so it was not fully awake yet which made it easy to get closer to . Thanks for any help in identification , Beth

Yes.
Just happened to come online as this image did....It is a female in the sphecid genus Prionyx. I have noticed that these wasps will "sleep" in loose aggregations on select vegetation, as do many of the sphecids.
