Curculionidae, stem boring larva, dorsal - Rhodobaenus

Curculionidae, stem boring larva, dorsal - Rhodobaenus
Plymouth Rock, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
August 4, 2017
August 4, 2017: sitting on the table were cuttings of extra host plants. My notes don't reflect why I opened a stem to find a stem boring larva but they do mention that the stem might be Joe-pye weed as I was trying to rear some lep larvae feeding on Joe-pye flowers (3rd year trying, again unsuccessful). Carrots work for stem boring larvae of Papaipema so put this larva into a carrot.
August 19, 2017: carrot rotting so cut it open to find the larva, dead, but still fat and firm. While taking a photo I pressed on the larva and it moved. Put it into a new hollowed out carrot.
August 23, 2017: a pupa, put into new carrot
September 3, 2017: gently knocked the pupa out of carrot but it was now an adult with parts of the pupal case still attached. Tarsi weren't situated correctly and black markings were indistinct
