not sure if this is a miner at all, but I think so. I thought I saw a shiny egg--could this be Brachys?

Moved from Stigmella quercipulchella.

I took another look at my photos, and I'm wondering if this might actually be an Ectoedemia. There is otherwise no record of S. quercipulchella from SE of Kentucky.

What about the records on Que
What about the records on Quercus nigra and Quercus coccinea (SA145 and SA146)?

Somehow I didn't have those in my notes
Those are probably correct, but not 100% certain. This one from Jim Petranka is the most convincing NC record, I think:

If you can find one with a larva inside, that would help to confirm (yellow vs. green). And a reared adult would remove any doubt.

Moved
Moved from Unidentified Leaf Mines.

This is a confusing mine, in part because the brown area is larger than the actual mine, which is 5 mm wide at the end. When backlit the central frass line is clearly visible. There is a tiny eggshell on the upper surface at the beginning of the mine, and I think the initial narrow portion is very contorted or otherwise obliterated by the later mining and discoloration. There is a crescent-shaped exit slit in the upper epidermis at the end of the mine. I'll send this leaf back with your empty vials (hopefully tomorrow).
