Per Owlets, page 290, Chris Schmidt says the northern populations of what has been called A vinnula likely represent an undescribed species. We are placing these images here until this species is described.

Host plant questions and lack
Host plant questions and lack of markings aside, this matches nothing I could find in terms of numbers and placement of warts (as visible) as well as Acronicta 'vinnula'. Might this be an early prepupa with obscured striping and off its host? See page 290 of Owlet Caterpillars and also images at MPG. Are any other photos available? Was the caterpillar reared?

Definitely not Bombycoidea. Looks Noctuoidea to me.
