Perithemis intensa - female

Perithemis intensa - Female
Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, Irwindale, Los Angeles County, California, USA
September 18, 2007
Size: length ~24 mm
One of several I observed both near water (the dammed San Gabriel River), and up to >200 m away from water in alluvial scrub. Most darted off upon sensing my approach, regardless how careful, landing on some dry plant stem. As I tried to trace their aerial maneuvers, I'd often lose them from sight when one of the more numerous paper wasps (Polistes dorsalis californicus)intersected their trajectory.
