vespinae sp. - Dolichovespula arenaria

vespinae sp. - Dolichovespula arenaria
Pachaug Forest, Voluntown, New London County, Connecticut, USA
October 22, 2017
Size: approx.30mm
Vespinae sp. landed on a tree trunk above me and began a motion of curling its abdomen towards the bark, not frantic but in a constant repetition. It occurred to me it was sunning but under the right wing in one photo there is an anomaly and I can't distinguish if it is significant or not.
