eats leaves

eats leaves
Fredonia, Chautauqua County, New York, USA
November 19, 2017
Size: about one inch
I wondered what was eating the leaves of my favorite house plant. Then I saw this insect one day while I was watering it, perched on a leaf. It ate the leaf from the outside to the main "vein" of the leaf.

Frassed
Moved from ID Request.

The white spots on it's back
The white spots on it's back is diatomaceous earth that it got on itself. Not very effective.

Leptoglossus occidentalis
These suck fluids from pine trees and cannot eat leaves. They do come indoors in the fall looking for warmth

Leptoglossus occidentalis diet
Thank you for I.D. I did some further research on Wikipedia and found that Leptoglosus occidentalis is not monophagous, but is adaptable to feed upon angiosperms ( seed producing plants) with a preference for resiniferous plants rich in terpenes (which describes the plant I found it on perpectly.)

They can feed on most plants that have juices
but all they do is insert their beaks and suck. It can weaken or harm the plant, but it does not look like someone took a bite out of a leaf. If parts of the leaves are actually eaten away - keep looking, Leptoglossus was not the culprit.
