Gall wasp of some type - Atrusca clavuloides

Gall wasp of some type - Atrusca clavuloides
Kenwood, Sonoma County, California, USA
September 20, 2007
Size: 10 mm
Found on Blue Oak at Bouverie Preserve, Kenwood, CA. This tree had many different type of galls on it.

Xanthoteras clavuloides
Common name "Club Gall Wasp." Thanks for posting which species of oak you found this on -- it's helpful for the id. There is a similar but not pointed-at-the-tip gall that occurs on Oregon oaks in your area.

Club Gall Wasp
Thank you for the ID. I looked on the net but could not find a picture which matched.

I have some photos of this species here in CalPhotos. I just posted to bugguide the other similar species, X. teres. Will post more info on the info pages later...

X. clavuloides is taller than X. teres, in addition to being pointy at the tip.

There is a great gall book on CA galls by Ron Russo you might want to check out -- see here.

Galls
Thanks Joyce, I will have to pick up Ron Russo book next chance I get. A couple of years ago Ron Russo gave the docent class at Bouverie Perserve a lecture which I was luck enough to attend.

Once you gave me the name of the gall I found them on CalPhotos. Your pictures on that web site are incredible. You must spend thousands of hours in the field.

Thanks for your comments on my photos Richard.
Unfortunately I don't spend quite that much time in the field ... it seems I mainly spend thousands of hours working. But I do get out every chance I get.
